A giant is a representation of an outstanding character of the town, often a noble or a popular character with traditional clothing. In Catalonia, the first documented giant dates from 1424 and nowadays there are about 600 groups of giants, formed by people who make them walk and dance in parades all around the country and abroad. A group of giants includes people from all ages: children and their parents, musicians, dancers, carriers of the giants and anyone who wants to join in and help in anything needed. You can enjoy it with your family and, as you do, you will meet many places and many different people and also maintain a tradition deeply rooted in our culture. It is not just a Catalan tradition; you can find giants all over the world.
In Malgrat de Mar there are two pairs of giants: Eulàlia and Bernat, which were presented on August 12, 1990, and represent Bernat Estornell and his wife Eulàlia, the first two to hold the Mayor’s baton in 1336, and Nicolau and Rita, which were presented on August 11, 2007, and represent the traditional occupations of our town history. Rita represents the agriculture of Malgrat, still of great importance today, and Nicolau represents a miner, a really relevant job in the early 1990s. We also have two smaller giants (gegantons), with a funnier role in parades: Ernest and Pilonet.
